Eleanor Wing Theme

For the rest of the semester I want to devote my photography to the theme of “empty places”. This stems out of some of the work I was doing when emulating Joel Meyerowitz and I found myself really enjoying photographing places that look as though they should be full but are empty. With this, I want to focus specifically on “liminal places”, meaning throughways from one place to another — places like gas stations, stairwells, train stations, hotels etc. that don’t really have a definitive place outside their relationship to the place you are coming from or going to. I think these spaces have a sense of altered reality or strangeness and I aim to capture that feeling in my photographs. Subject-wise, I want to explore a wide variety of “empty places” including indoor and outdoor spaces that have a sense of eeriness surrounding them. I would like to take photos both during the day with natural light and at night with artificial light and experiment with different shutter speeds to create a sense of surrealism in these photos. I aim to not take photos that include people or evidence of people (cars, etc.) and want to focus on places that seem as though they should be inhabited but are not.
