Gilles Coulon
Gilles Coulon was born in 1966 in Nogent-sur-Marne and is a
photographer that got his start by taking images of French society. In 1997 he was awarded the World Press Photo
First Prize in the “Daily Life” category for a documentary he made on Peuls
tribes. He travels to different parts of the world and takes images of people
just going about their lives. He has a wide variety of different subjects
photographed ranging from landscapes to wrestling matches. Most of his
photographs have the same set up but they vary depending on subject matter. For
his landscapes he has the horizon line center for most of them. His portraits
of people vary and are very dynamic in some aspects. He captures interesting
angles in some photos while other times having everything centered. The work
that caught my eye was what he did with his set of photos named White Night. He
visited Niger where he took photos of dangerous, dirty areas at night that had
a single light that illuminating them. They look so simple because they are
just centered landscape with fluorescent, and neon lights illuminating them.
Nothing that is extravagant by any means, there is something mysterious and
spooky about each image that I really find fascinating.
In Sook Kim
In Sook Kim was born in born in Pusan, South Korea in 1969.
She studied in Germany and now has a studio in Germany. She is known for her
photographs of buildings where you can see the activities where you can see
what’s going on inside each window. She would photograph these images with a large-format
camera from the other side of the building. Each window is lit up with its own
unique color to create a mood. Inside each of the rooms is a person or people
dealing with loneliness. Things like alcohol, sex, and television are involved
in her images. Most of the images look like the people in them are contemplating
their life. The contrasts created with the lights create an eerie feeling. It’s
almost a sense of hopelessness in some images. The photographs are all set at
an eye level position. The only thing that is changing is the content within
the room. I think that these images are really interesting mostly because I
like the lighting. It really reinforces the feeling that each photo is meant to
show.
Janelle Lynch
Janelle Lynch was born in 1969 and is an American
photographer. She takes large format photos of landsacpes. In 1999, she received
an MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts. She has done several
photography projects all around the world. Most of her landscapes are in
forests and usually focus on a particular tree or branch. She has a set of
images that are all weeds or vines growing out of white buildings. She has a
wide range of landscapes but I did not see any that were large scale. They are
usually close ups or they are at an intermediate distance. My favorite set of
images from her are the ones that are of a park that has things like benches
and slides in an abandon area that look as if nature has taken over. She is
able to capture a beautiful yet simple side to nature that I find refreshing
